Acupuncture and
Chinese herbs bring healing to all aspects of the individual: mind,
body, emotions, spirit. Acupuncture in a basic sense is the insertion
of fine needles along energy meridians of the body. The insertion of
the needles stimulates the energy of the meridians (called qi,
"chee") and induces what I call a "plastic" energetic state, meaning
more flexible and subject to modification. Patients often feel drowsy
and relaxed during this time as the body's energy in a sense adjusts
itself in response to the stimulating input of the needles.
The
purpose of acupuncture is to clear energy blocks and bring nourishing
energy to the places of the body that need it. In this sense, it
serves as a balancing agent, restoring energy flow where it is blocked,
and bringing energy back to places that are deficient. Illness and
pain are seen as being caused by either excesses or deficiencies of
energy, so by balancing the distribution of energy illness can be
prevented and pain relieved.
The Chinese Herbal system is a
complex and elegant treatment modality. Chinese herbs are not used in
the same way we use supplements. When a patient receives Chinese herbs
from a practitioner they receive a formula (combination of herbs) that
has often been tailored to fit their individual symptomatic
presentation. This formula will be changed as the symptoms change or resolve,
when symptoms change it indicates that the energy is shifting.
Traditional
Chinese Medicine uses a diagnostic system that takes into account the
fact that disorders can be caused by different underlying factors. For
example, a headache can result from several different kinds of
underlying energetic imbalances. It is up to the practitioner to
determine which imbalance is causing the problem, and address the
imbalance accordingly with a corresponding acupuncture and herbal
treatment. It is therefore not a "one treatment fits all" approach.
